New to yoga? What to expect …

If you are new to yoga perhaps it is a bit daunting. But don’t worry, we will guide you along the way.
Where to start
We do advise that you start with an Introductory course. These courses step you through the fundamentals of yoga and prepare you well to come to our ongoing classes. Find an Introductory course
We also have a Yoga Basics ongoing class which is a 60 minute class covering yoga fundamentals and is thus a great place for beginners. Find a Yoga Basics class (you may need to scroll to next week).
Taking care of you
On your first visit come a little before time as we will want to collect some info from you. We ask a few health questions so we can look after you better. Please let us know of anything that will help us help you. We always strive to help you to modify your yoga to accommodate your particular needs.
Our practice spaces
Our studio has two practice spaces. Closest to Henley Beach Road is the Main Hall. Down the courtyard under the veranda is the door to the smaller room, the Studio Room. You might want to check to see which room your class is in. The paper timetable flier uses the symbol MH for Main Hall and SR for Studio Room.
Shoes are not worn into the yoga space so it can be a good idea to choose shoes that are easy to take off and put on. In the Main Hall shoes are left in the reception area. In the Studio Room they are deposited in the shelf inside the door.
What to wear
Wear clothing that is easy to move in. It is not necessary to buy special yoga clothes. But there are a few tips to consider when making your choice of clothing.
- Yoga Spirit Studios is not a hot yoga studio so it is not appropriate to wear bikinis or revealing clothing
- Closer fitting so loose and billowing clothing will not obstruct your movement
- Check that your top does not slide up your torso when you hang upside down
- Ensure that your clothing does not show more than you would be comfortable with when you move, such as when you lean forward or raise a leg.
What to bring
Yoga Spirit Studios is a fully equipped studio. Many people do like to use their own mat and that is fine, but we do have mats you can borrow, all we ask is that you clean it afterward using the spray and paper towel provided. Sometimes we bring our head and face in contact with equipment such as blankets and bolsters so you might wish to bring a small towel or sarong to place between the equipment and your head/face.
We need you to bring at least, a mat and a thick towel or blanket which can be used folded to form a firm cushion for sitting.
We look forward to meeting you. Enjoy your yoga.
